Sevierville - Donald R. Shroyer, 77, formerly of Essex and Rosedale and of Winter Haven, Fla., passed away suddenly on Saturday, Dec. 28, in Sevierville, Tenn. Born Nov 4, 1936, in Hepzibah, W.Va., he was the son of the late Mary Ellen Shroyer (nee Shreve).
Donald was educated in the WV school system and moved to Essex at age 18 to live with his aunt, the late Pauline Bennett (nee Shreve). He was employed with Pulaski Lumber Company in Rosedale until 1983, when he moved to Winter Haven, FL where he was employed with Glidden Paints and Lowe’s as Sales Manager. Upon his retirement he worked part time for Walt Disney World and Dollywood.
He had a passion for NHRA drag racing, which he did for many years as a hobby at local tracks around Maryland and Pennsylvania, and had many trophies to show for his efforts. He was also a Nascar fan and enjoyed attending races especially in Daytona Beach, Fla. His love of racing was passed down to his children and grandchildren. He also loved the warmth and sunshine of Florida, which will be his final resting place.
As stated by a friend and coworker, “Don taught me a lot of things about hardware, paint and life lessons over the years. He was a kind and gentle man and I appreciated him and what he meant to his family.”
He was preceded in death by his grandparents Lawrence and Flossie Shreve of Hepzibah, W. Va., and his father-in-law Calvern R. Adams Sr. of Essex. Those left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife Thelma Shroyer (nee Adams) of Sevierville, Tenn., his daughters, Debbie (Phillip) Kirk of Salisbury, N.C., Sherry Blaze of Winter Haven, Fla., and Cindie (Karl) Evans of Union Bridge, Md. and his son Don T. Shroyer of Aberdeen, N.C. He was the beloved grandfather (Pop-Pop) of Cory (Samantha) Kirk, Carrie Kirk (William) Dunn, Cascie Kirk, Cal Shroyer, Ashley Evans Worley, Blake Evans; great-grandfather (Pop-Pop) of Skyler Dunn, Rileigh Dunn, Emily Kirk, Lilli Worley and Aidan Shroyer; son-in-law of Thelma Adams. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, brothers- and sisters-in-law and cousins.
Atchley Funeral Home & Cremation Services of East Tennessee handled all arrangements. A private service will be held at a later date in Daytona Beach, Fla.
